MEMORIAL TO THE HOLOCAUST VICTIMS

A memorial to the Holocaust victims who were murdered in Odesa in 1941 by order of the Nazi occupation authorities.
The memorial was created in cooperation with the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany.
On 17-25 October 1941, more than 22,000 people were shot and killed in nine huge artillery powder magazines on the outskirts of Odessa. Now, dozens of people come to the memorial site with flowers to honour the memory of those who died as a result of the mass executions.
The death of thousands of innocent people has made this place very dramatic. The depth of the tragedy must be captured in architectural form. It is necessary to create a single space, shaped by a common idea. Mixing functions here is inappropriate.
In this project, an 80-metre-long alley is framed by nine vertical slabs, which are identified with the fire that broke out in nine gunpowder warehouses. Standing between these slabs, you also feel like you are standing between the charred structures of the gunpowder warehouse walls. This gives even more depth to the experience. The monument touches every visitor.
It makes even the unprepared viewer think, approach and read about the events recorded here. The surrounding area is designed as a memorial square.
