MEMORIAL TO THE FIGHTERS FOR UKRAINE
The development process for this project began even before Ukraine was shaken by a full-scale invasion. Back then, in 2020 and 2021, this memorial, which we at NG Architects worked on in collaboration with sculptor Mykhailo Reva, was called the ‘Memorial to the Soldiers of the Anti-Terrorist Operation.’ However, we had no idea how quickly the world could change, and with it, the concept of the memorial.
The Memorial to the Soldiers of Ukraine is designed as a space of silence, remembrance and inner concentration, integrated into the fabric of a large city park. Its architectural idea is to combine the sacredness of the memorial with the openness of public space, where memory becomes part of the city's daily life.
The composition of the memorial is based on axial symmetry, which creates a solemn perspective and enhances the sense of order and dignity. The central element is a raised memorial platform with a water surface and light accents, symbolising purification, the continuity of life and the reflection of memory.
The surroundings of the memorial are designed as a landscaped amphitheatre for contemplation: soft geometric terraces, trees and shrubs, flower beds with seasonal colour changes. The vegetation acts as a natural barrier, separating the memorial space from the active areas of the park, preserving the atmosphere of concentration.
Our job is to make the world around us better. And we always stick to this credo. After all, this is what we work for.
However, architecture and construction are impossible when someone constantly destroys in minutes what has been built over years and could have been enjoyed for decades. It is impossible to create something when rockets are flying overhead, destroying your city. It is impossible to think about beauty when you have to hide with your children in a bomb shelter.
We at NG Architects would like to use this text as an opportunity to thank those who protect us and give us hope for the future — the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For their courage. For their resilience. For the opportunity to live in peace, which they have given us at a tremendous cost. For understanding the value of life and history.
May this memorial remind us of the value of every moment of life and how we must be resilient and strong in this life. May it serve as a reminder to all of us why we are here. And to whom we owe it.
Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!
